Just heard the terrible news about the murder of Rob Reiner and his wife. Three lives ruined and effectively ended for a as yet to be determined reason. Who knows? We think we know celebrities, and depending on whom we are referencing, grieve the loss. I didn’t know this man, but still regret the fact that, for whatever reason, he and his wife are dead, and facing eternity.
I remember being 7-8 years old when Archie Bunker would wow us all with his loud, grouchy, yet hilarious idioms. Liberals were horrified, conservatives were likely offended at Archie’s clownish approach to life. All in the Family was a regular institution around our house for years. Then there was meathead: he was the straightman for Archie’s buffoonery, the exact opposite of Archie’s often bigotted, aways opinionated manner of life. Meathead, alias Michael Stivic was the flaming liberal born out the 60s hippy protests and equally impractical as was “Arch.” I can see them getting stuck trying to get through a doorway at the same time…brings a smile to my face even now.
Rob Reiner went on to make several interesting, albeit liberal movies; acting, directing, etc. I lost track of him, seeing his name once in a while, but not too often. To me, and likely to many others, he will always be “Meathead.” So where is he now? Liberals will say that God is love and would never judge someone who “lived a good life” as did Reiner (For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God…Rom 3:23). Then there are the Conservatives, who will damn him as if they were ones who held that power (Judge not, that ye be not judged…Matt 7:1). Wherever he and his wife are, there they be. It is too late to make any changes. When anyone dies in such a way I always hold out hope that maybe they got something somewhere along the way; a Sunday school profession as a child, a tract they read and believed, a private moment when they got the gospel and believed. That is all it would take; Repentance toward God and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ. There are no Jews, Catholics, Buddhists, Hindus, Baptists, or Anglicans in Heaven. The only people in heaven are those who have trusted Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour, believing that Jesus died for their sins, was buried and rose again the third day:Plus nothing…minus nothing.
